An Evening to Remember On Friday evening August 6 after services, many of us viewed an eighteen- minute video that was completed as a senior class projected by three young women from Israel. The video was a memorial to a friend Nir Landsman, an Israeli soldier, who died in an auto accident. A freak accident of another car swerving into them took the life of this young man who was filled with life, joy, love, giving and caring for others. They intended for the video to be not only a memorial to him but also a strong reminder of the many young Israelis who die in auto accidents each year. The level of intensity of emotion and the level of professionalism in the film made it only more remarkable. The three young women who will be embarking on their mandatory two years of service in the armed forces in Israel were with us for the screening of the film. In what could only be termed Beshert, Lois Jones met Nir’s mother when our Temple Sinai group was in Israel at Or Hadash in Haifa. That same evening there was a memorial service for Nir. Nir’s mother has started many activities to commemorate her son and his work including starting a student exchange program to bring communication students from Realy school in Haifa to Glendale and to visit our synagogue. Sharon Friedman, Gilli Miller and Lilush Berkovitz were the first three. These were the three who directed, filmed and edited this amazing video. A copy of the video has been left for us and Lois Jones has another copy. I would suggest that our auxiliaries including Sisterhood, Brotherhood, The Seniors and our Temple Sinai Teens as well as our religious school consider doing programs to allow a greater number of our congregants to view this amazing video. More importantly than just the film is the underlying message to young people as to how easily life is destroyed by a mere accident at the wheel. They have started a campaign in Israel, a road safety education program for youth, to bring to the forefront the number of young Israelis who die each year in driving accidents. A foundation has also been established to continue the work of improving road safety.
